  • @FlyinMiataVideo i know that and im sure that at the flywheel the tuned b6 has 160 or a bit more. im just comaring the increase versus other stock motors that are in the same displacement range.

  • @Bikerboy1282 You're comparing flywheel numbers to wheel numbers - there's a difference there that needs to be taken into account. The increase over stock is pretty good. It's just that Miata motors simply aren't that strong at naturally aspirated horsepower.

  • @FlyinMiataVideo im more thinking in comparasin to 4age black top 160 and b16 vtec 160 stock. i was expecing to see a larger increase from the compession boost and porting.

  • @FlyinMiataVideo I recently traded my Miata in on a new Mazdaspeed 3, 2011 edition, but between that and my Suzuki B-King I can play the go-fast game. Both sons have Miatas, one has turbocharged his.

  • @Bikerboy1282 Welcome to the world of naturally aspirated horsepower. It's actually more expensive to build the 1.6 than the 1.8, and you'll always get more bang for your buck with greater displacement. Plus that's for a brand new engine, so you should compare it against the cost of a brand new stock unit to be fair. Still, a turbo will give more power for your dollar.

The high compression naturally aspirated engines are a huge amount of fun to drive, though. Different animals than the turbos.

  • @OldWriter205 As far as I know, nobody has tried to put the Coyote motor in a Miata yet. It's still pretty new, and it takes a while to engineer a good swap. The DOHC heads are liable to make fitment very difficult in the small car. The LS swap has been well debugged by this point, and that's what you want for a car that's racing in a week-long race.

  • @FlyinMiataVideo I have not checked the weight of the new 5-0 Ford engine, so wonder how it stacks up against the LS engine. Of course I realize that 'crate' availability and cost are factors too.

  • @FlyinMiataVideo hhmm thats not a big increase when its a bit over 9 grand for a full engine.

  • @OldWriter205 It's a Miata chassis and a Miata suspension and Miata handling. That's how we claim "Miata". The V8 just makes it go faster.

As for the Mustang-powered cars, they're still around. But the LS Chevy we're using is lighter, gives more ground clearance and makes more power. It's a couple of generations newer than the old 302 was.

  • @Bikerboy1282 Keith has an 11:1 B6 in one of his cars, and it makes 148 rwhp. Stock is about 90 rwhp.
