A Rant about Tolerance

A Rant About Tolerance—a purposely ironical title--describes tolerance and intolerance as part of a spectrum of human behavior and ideology, not as tidy opposites where one picks the obvious "right answer." The film provides a conceptual toolkit of memorable stories, to take tolerance out of the stratosphere of big, inaccessible ideas, and show how ancient, universal, and straightforward the idea of tolerance is: it's the Golden Rule.

The narrator explores how an idea that a child can understand proves difficult in the world. Rant uses anecdotes, research, and wit to describe a favorable "green zone" on the tolerance spectrum, and explore things that coax humans out of it. Recent psychological research suggests a human cognitive impediment that makes it difficult to see proportions between harm done to oneself, and the strength of one's response. Experimental subjects, asked to match uncomfortable pressure on a finger, consistently overestimate the force on their own finger, and underestimate the force with which they respond. Can this two-way misperception contribute to the difficulty of breaking cycles of revenge? Viewers get a simple punchline to remember.

The narrator describes the "I believe..." problem--any belief that the believer values more highly than he values his obligation to his fellow humans. Descriptions of dangers from true-believers' extreme behavior, and the challenge of responding to extremes, lead to a story of a young girl. Exploring race relations with her dad, she asks the dramatic, fundamental question that brings the film to its close.
