Part of that new math, says #1 New York Times bestselling author Jill Conner Browne -- whom USA Today calls "just plain funny" -- includes the addition of an outsize sense of humor to balance the equation of your growing family. The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit is a hilarious (though not scientifically tested) wink at the time-honored mysteries of parenting, because anybody who has ever had a kid or has ever known one knows that the experience is neither fun nor profitable -- so you might as well laugh! As each generation begins its hopeful, happy, and, yes, sometimes harrowing journey as Parent and Child, together they spawn a new body of "knowledge," the nuances of which will elude the Experts every time. Here are stories of the things we do for Mother Love -- or, the most incredibly full-time volunteer job ever -- and tips guaranteed not to be found in any other parenting guide.

  • Not a lot of Irish people in Mississippi? After everybody else moved away, that's pretty-much all that's LEFT there. They're Irish Protestants, mainly, which is why the state's white population is mostly Baptist and Pentecostal.

Anyway, the Sweet Potato thing was the best thing that EVER happened to that wretched metropolis. The City should have done everything possible to help Browne. And there should be a statue of her, and a major street named after her.

  • I love Jill's sense of fun. It's contagious. :D

I've got most of her books.

  • @Flgaljane Amen!

  • For anyone who wonders, the Sweet Potato Queen weekend is, BY FAR, the most important yearly event in Jackson. It's basically Mississippi's Mardi Gras.

We were in town for something else, around 6:30, and the aftermath of the parade looked precisely like Uptown New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Glitter everywhere. TONS of people still milling around, obviously happy...cars parked all the way out to the interstate....

BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO JACKSON

  • Just finished the book- The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love.

Gotta get out my ol' tiara and sparkly boots!

  • Tammy Jill, you are awesome in the extreme ... may the SPQs reign forever! I'm a slackass Queen wannabe from Florida and if more people would adopt the SPQ attitude, the world would be a much happier - a funnier - place. Can I have an amen?

  • I am a QUEEN. Dubbed by the BIG BOSS QUEEN herself! Hurray for SPQ!

  • i know loads of potato queens...

  • I've been a closet sweet potato QUEEN for years!

  • Queens rock! Proud to be a Spud Stud!
