This my 50 HP Miller gas engine in its new home at Rough and Tumble Engineers in Kinzers PA. It is a throttle governed engine. It makes 50 HP at 180 RPM. The bore and stroke is 13" X 20". The flywheels are 72" in diameter and the engine weighs 15,000 lbs including the timbers under the engine. It uses compressed air for starting and has a timed valve to roll the engine over. It also has a ballanced exhaust valve much like a valve in a Pickering governor. It uses a magneto to fire a spark plug for ignition. There are two spark plugs on the engine, one for running and the other in case the first one gets fouled. You can remove the plug that is not working while the engine is running to clean or replace the plug. After the engine starts I close a valve on the air intake and I cut down the gas to throttle the engine manually so it will run slower than the governor will allow it. The engine powered a feed mill in Prospect PA and was removed from the mill in 1968.

  • I usually run it around 100 rpm for show. Rated speed is around 180 or 200 rpm.

  • I take it this is a typical rpm, just HUGE flywheels?
