The sun was going down behind a tattoo tree
And the simple act of an oar's stroke put diamonds in the sea
And all because of the phosphorus there in quantity
As I dug you digging me in Mexico

There in the Valley of Scorpio beneath the cross of jade
Smoking on a seashell pipe the gypsies had made
We sat and we dreamed awhile of smugglers bringing wine
That crystal-thought time in Mexico

Sitting in a chair of bamboo sipping grenadine
Straining my eyes for a surfacing submarine
Kingdoms of ants walk across my feet
I'm a-shaking in my seat in Mexico

Grasshoppers creaking in the velvet jungle night
Microscopic circles in the fluid of my sight
Watching a black-eyed native girl cut and trim the lamp
Valentino vamp in Mexico

The sun was going down behind a tattoo tree
And the simple act of an oar's stroke put diamonds in the sea
And all because of the phosphorus there in quantity
As I dug you digging me in Mexico

Manni is an awesome musician. Maybe he did really cover it this good but I have my doubts considering it looked out of synch with his lips and he did not show himself playing in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9bjhWlrXz8

Please listen to Manni's other cover work of Donovan, which is very good, but not PERFECT in emulation like the cover video which I question the authenticity of.

Here is the Original:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRrjLkVaHK8

Please do yourself a real favor and listen to this cover which is sung and played with more style and feeling than the original in my opinion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1pkGAa471Q

Feel free to ask me questions about how I go about making my analysis and mix to better understand and do it for yourself if you are in doubt of my processes in uncovering this musical forgery trick.

  • I'd vouch for Manni nailing the cover. I've conversed with him a vast quantity of times about Donovan, and I have no doubt he would practice until perfect before posting. Just my personal feeling.

  • @Dansull123 - You may be correct. I have listened to this and analyzed it and I do find points where it seems he could not have done the trickery I first suspected. It may well be that it is such a great cover it just seems UNREAL and too close to the original to not cause me some doubt. Manny is Quite talented, that is for sure!

  • John Mellencamp just ripped off this song for his "new" song "Someday the Rains Will Fall." At least he stole from the best.
