Don't be discouraged... I think you have potential. Try playing with a metronome or some type of drum beat so that you get a better feel for the timing. Also, while I improvise a lot, I'd say you need to stick to written material (even your own) until you have more experience. It didn't "suck" but I think you should try to practice every day for a year and compare. I used to practice every day and I think it helps so much even if you can only play 5 minutes one day... do it.
