  • We can agree to disagree :) I believe that punishment is often used at times when +R would be enough. I know a man (there probably are more) has trained his working line GSD to SchH3 without using +P in training so it IS possible (many in the sport say it´s not). I have never had a hard dominant dog. People that own these kinds of dogs also train with +R but say that it isn´t always possible to avoid +P because of the self reinforcing and/or dominant behaviours that can´t be solved with +R only.

  • @Jagervision sure we will agree to disagree :) one of the reasons I took on Vinnie and why I will take on other dogs with aggression issues in the future and probably breeds that are more associated with aggression is to hopefully prove that +R is effective for any kind of behaviour issue in any breed of dog :) thanks for your contribution and your thoughts, I appreciate it :)

  • I am sorry I wasn´t more clear. Yes, +R does work on every dog and desired behaviours should be trained exactly this way. But it doesn´t always cut it for all dogs and problems in all circumstance.

Problems are caused by stupid people and banning (be it "bad" breeds or "bad" equipment) is not dealing with the real problem- lack of information and common sense or just people with no empathy. There are more that just the old-school escape training with the e-collar.

  • @Jagervision I believe that behaviours can be solved with +R, check out my videos on Vinnie, ok he is small but it applies exactly the same to any size dog, he had quite the record of biting and had had punishment used on him a lot to try and solve his bad behaviours which there were a long list of and he went through home after home. he didn't need punishment, he needed to be trained to understand what he should do when presented with a situation that made him want to bite.

  • I just watched some funny videos where teen boys, or young men were testing the shock collar on themselves. They could hardly tolerate it. They should never be used on a dog! Cruel! The only negative training I used on Lucy was squirt of water in the face. Cause I couldn't get her to stop barking at male guests. Just did it once. The surprise of it is what worked.

  • @OneCrankyFemale sorry for the late reply on this but I totally agree, if you wouldn't put it around your own neck and take it on then you shouldn't be using them.

  • The problem is with people abusing the method not the tool being used (as with ALL training devises!) First of all it's not a "Shock" collar it's an electronic collar. If used correctly does NOT produce ANY degree of PAIN to the dog. It's only intended to stop or get the attention of the animal when he is already in a zone. Say, already zeroed in on a squirrel that you didn't see or anticipate until he was already in prey/high speed chase mode. I've used the e-collar on myself to test.

  • with it all the time. Not painful at all. In fact most people are surprised at how and why it works when they are actually taught by an educated professional. It is really the same psychology that gets people conditioned to answer their phone to escape/avoid the +P of the ring. +P doesn't always need to be painful to work

  • I love clicker training. Use it a lot. However I humbly disagree that it works as well in every situation. A large amount of dogs are failed by marker training due to the lack of drive threshold especially when dealing with behavioral problems such as aggression. These dogs were failed by some of the most reputable in the field, and owners told they needed put down. These dogs are still living after getting help with a remote collar. Education not banning is the answer. And yes, i shock myself

  • BAN SHOCK COLLARS!

  • @OneCrankyFemale Bark collars and invisible fence collars give a static eletric correction & can be very uncomfortable. Just like if you were to touch an electic fence for livestock. There are also E-Collars that do not give static electric shocks. It is a tickle or tingling sentation instead. I completely agree that dogs should not be "punished", but I also strongly believe that dogs need discipline in there lives. Discipline is a natural part of life. Take it away and you have big problems.

  • I just saw your video and I agree! Positive training is a great way to train your dog. Not only will you and your dog be better bonded, you will feel better about training your dog humanely. Also,I would like to say that using shock collars isn't a bad thing, and they have been known to work, and we have used them in the past for hard to handle dogs, but my JRT is very well trained (I will send you a video ASAP) and I have only used positive training, and Cesar Millan methods. Both are GREAT! :)

  • I really cant see why this video has 4 dislikes, positive training is the way forward :)

  • Hi. Here is a clip of my young mali being recalled in what has to be described as difficult circumstances. He is trained using purely positive reinforcement and they don't come any higher drive or more confident than this dog. Hope this is the sort of thing you're after.Sorry about the swearing!! v=5Vft9jSUbYE.
