MINI Madness shows you how to install a limited slip differential on a R53/R56 MINI Cooper S. Installing the OS Giken (shown) and the Quaife LSD are similar process for both the R53 and R56 models.

  • Surprised he started with that ignorant old BS statement about power to one wheel - open differential applies EVEN torque to both wheels, if one has limited traction and only accepts x lbs.ft of torque before slipping, then the other wheel will only receive x lbs.ft of torque regardless of it being able to take more!

A LSD differential can apply more torque to the wheel that can accept more and that's why they're used.

  • hi, i have a 2000 celica and i was wondering, is it the same process with my c60 transmission, its a 6 speed as well. thanks for a great video!

  • Can I install a differential on a mini cooper r56 that doesn't have the factory differential option?

  • Stop!!!!.. Good Vid.

  • use a workmate... it's made of wood and you can clamp the differential's bottom bearing in between the two halves. Then it doesn't tip over.

but this seems to work too

but you use a metal hammer on the ring gear!!!! I would really use a soft hammer...

  • I would have used a rubber mallet to take off the ringgear off the differential.

  • is it the same way or almost the same for most cars?

  • Worked this project today. There were only two issues. My 2007 R56 had E-12 bolts, not T-40 TORX. The second issue is you can't fill the transmission before you install it in the MINI. The fluid runs out the shaft holes and the top vent.

Recommend adding just a small amount of oil. When installed, then top off the fluid. Run transmission through the gears. Drain to remove any debris from the install and then refill.
