BIEDO (the Burnett Inland Economic Development Organisation) is establishing 20 working permaculture gardens across the North & South Burnett in South East Queensland, Australia, as community focal points for sustainability education, lifelong learning, practical "sustainable" skills development as well as trials for industry innovations in sustainable water, soil & energy management.
The project has two purposes:
Modelling sustainable farm and industry (primary producers, business, processors, manufacturers) practices
Engaging diverse community sectors in developing skills, knowledge and hands on experience in environmental care and sustainable living practices.
The project will expand on BIEDO's pilot Community Permaculture Garden at Wondai State School, the first community-based step towards a green and sustainable region. With the pressures of climate change and peak oil, it is imperative the skills of practical sustainable living and farming techniques are made available to primary producers, young people and the community. Practical sustainable living and farming techniques encompasses effective use of natural resources, sustainable water management, sustainable energy use to avoid pressure on non-renewable energy sources, management of soil and air, respect for natural habitats and living creatures and the importance of a concerted community approach to effectively manage our rural environment.
BIEDO has a vision of the Burnett Inland as a green leader in sustainable community & industry practice by 2010. The three ethics of permaculture are care of the earth, care of people and sharing resources. We aim to promote these values, and their practical expression in daily life, through each & every community in the Inland. We believe this project will engage primary producers, community members and local businesses in grassroots activities they own, that build their connectivity, socio-economic wellbeing & enviro-sustainability. It will engage young people the energy resource managers of tomorrow, as well as current energy resource managers parents, business people and retirees in the principles of permaculture. It will give them the knowledge and skills to deal with the pressures of climate change and peak oil and provide a sustainable living framework for the future.
