This one is a really fun Quartz Composition (at least in my opinion!) The file is available at http://kineme.net/composition/gtoledo3/Twirler , and needs the Kineme3D plugin to operate. It's compatible with Snow Leopard, as well as Leopard.

I used some spherical mapping, Kineme3D heightifield for extrusion, and some other fun tricks, like using the very nice Twist GLSL file from the new MeshKit private framework from Apple Snow Leopard. to manipulate the image sent to the Kineme3D heigtfield.

By using the Twist GLSL on top of the sphere, to warp the image that's being mapped to it, extremely compelling visuals can result. Feeding nature textures through this visual engine can be quite compelling, in creating exaggerated "mini-planet" looking objects, and sometimes even more fanciful looking spheres. The interaction of the Twirl GLSL with something like the extrusion of the Kineme3D is very appealing to me.

  • This is awesome. Gonna get the file and dig into this! Still don't get glsl shading yet; am still transitioning from Bryce to Blender; and rendering to realtime; but quartz is super and seeing stuff like this gives me hope I can get better results in the future. Thanks!

  • This is nice G.
