Its a 18'. I like how you added extra flotation. Adds a little safety without complexity/ weight of outriggers. I am going to copy, Thanks

I have a complete Grumman lateen rig with a single longer and wider lee board, picked it up 4 months ago cant wait to get it out just have not found the time.
After watching your clip I'm a afraid and may sell it any taker in Wisconsin

The sail, rudder and leeboards were made by Grumman but I believe that they have been discontinued. I made the mast, spar, boom, tiller, mast thwart, leeboard thwart, buoyancy bag. I got the rudder mounting bracket and sail and some other small parts from Ralph Frese at Chicago Canoe Land but I think he's sold his business now. Yes I did have to drill some holes in the gunwales for mast and leeboard adjustments. Outriggers would make it more stable but I like the way it handles as it is...

I am thinking about doing the same thing. Did you buy the sailing kit or made it yourself? How was the rudder/tiller combo mounted on the canoe? Did you have to drill holes? Would the canoe be more stable if the lee boards have a bigger surface? Would outriggers help? Thanks. It sure looks like fun.
Posted video, search for "grumman sailing canoe" kind of light wind but it was only wind we have had in the last two weeks. Also found original grumman sail and rigging instruction. They are posted on Flicker.com in group "CRANNE"

@itsbetterthenwork Looks good, what size Grumman is it? Mine is a 1550. They really go well in force 4 and above as you can see. Unfortunately my Toyota Lucida that I carry the canoe on is now off the road, so no more sailing for me until next April. I can't wait, it's such good fun...

I recently resurrected my Dads Grumman sail canoe after thirty plus years of collecting dust. It is similar to yours other it has the 65 square foot Gunter rig, you have the 45 square foot Lateen rig. I will video it next time I take it out.
One thing I noticed in your video is the rudder is not completely down, it may have come up from water pressure or weeds; you had that boat moving! You will get better performance with it down.

@itsbetterthenwork I look forward to seeing sailing your Grumman. I assume it must be a 17' Grumman. You are correct, the rudder could go down a little deeper, maybe I can change the mounting bracket slightly. They really are great fun to sail...

Yes indeed, it's top of capabilities!!!! You may be unexperienced but you are doing really good in such wind condition. Always remember F5 is top limit for sailing canoe, go to OCSG on the web and look for Beaufort windchart. I always sail canoe with outriggers for peace and stability, thus able to bring camping gear and other stuff.
See my vid ''Sailing in perfect conditions'' from my user name (grafophone). Cya buddy.
