I'm surprised you buy more weaponry rather than shields. I can't say that all the weapons in this game are equally viable, though.

While playing through on Elite, I realised that most of the flying bosses share a similar weakness: while some of their guns track your movements, they never fire fast or long enough to make them a threat. Most of them don't usually fly to the extreme edge of the screen either. This means that if you keep to the left or right of the screen and just move up and down slowly to dodge all incoming projectiles, you can technically destroy the bosses without taking any damage.
