BOB WRIGHT (1929-2011)
Clarinetist Bob Wright died on August 15th at the age of 82, after series of strokes. He was born in Liverpool, where he played with the Merseysippi Jazz Band and Manchester's Zenith Six before emigrating to Montréal, Canada in 1957, where he joined the Mountain City Jazz Band. In the late 1960's he came to Toronto and was a founder member of the Climax Jazz Band with Chris Daniels. His regular band, during the later years, was the Freeway Jazz Band, playing monthly concerts at the Rex Hotel in Toronto.
He was a frequent guest of the Hot Five Jazzmakers at their Saturday matinees at "C'est what?' in downtown Toronto and here are a couple of tracks from a session on September 22nd 1990 - "Careless Love" and "Doing the New Lowdown". His first instrument was the clarinet but he was also a gifted soprano sax player, as you will hear on this video. Bob had a knack of picking out good jazz tunes and he introduced some beauties into the Toronto jazz fraternity, often with a good vocals too.
In these cuts Brian Graville moves between piano and trumpet and we see Colin Bray- bass; Earl Craddock guesting on banjo and leader Brian Towers-trombone.
Thanks to Jack Sadler for recording this for us.
