Humanity pushed its way to the stars -- and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out.
Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

I'd to know why he chooses women as his heros. I've only read his Honor series but it sounds like she's not the only one./ This lady seems to be mechanical in her actions and questions. I expected her to yell, "NEXT" at the end of this. I wish I could ask him questions. I'd be more invested. I repect the man for his views on the military and their families and the sacrifice of both. Rare to find someone who mirrors my beliefs having been raised in Vietnam and Indonesia in war times. :) Songs

You know, we're closer to the Gbaba than we'd like to admit....

Read it. Seems like a mix of Heirs of Empire and The Apocalypse Troll. With fewer main characters. Though in this case, Dahak isn't basically all-powerful. Actually, it's a combination of the two with a few twists.

I read this book on vacation in July of 2008. Loved it, but it was my first sience fiction book.
I had to read more Weber... and I have since read the entire Honor Harrington series, and am in the middle of my first spin-off: Shadow of Saganami. I have never been so engaged in one author, but it has been a lot of fun.
BTW, the 2nd book in the Safehold series, "By Schism Rent Asunder" (great title), was also awesome.

The thing i like the most and wich i see is a reoccuring theme of his books is the looming threat of an ancient alien threat against humanity who has to overcome its internal issues aswell as external.
Great books indeed.
