Iran v-ballers down Poland in FIVB W-Cup
Iran's national volleyball team has gained another victory after upsetting the hitherto undefeated Polish team in the 2011 International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Men's World Cup.
The European heavyweights fell victim to the Iranians' resilience and resolve on the first day of the second-round action after Iran twice came back from behind to win the game 3-2 at Japan's Osaka Central Gym on Thursday.
The scintillating match saw its first set go Poland's way 25-23, but the Iranians drew level in the second set with a 28-26 scoreline.
The Polish team reasserted itself in the third set after an overwhelming 25-8 win handed them their second, and last, set of the game.
This, however, served as a wakeup call for the Iranians as they rallied to take the fourth set 26-24 and finished off Poland 15-11 in the fifth.
Iran's Seyyed Mehdi Bazargard, who scored 15 points, was named the most impressive player of the match.
Iran had already defeated European champions Serbia and tournament hosts Japan. The country's only defeat came before Cuba. The Iranians are due to line up against Argentina on Friday.
"We are very happy with this victory because we beat a strong team. I told the players after the win over Serbia that we were looking for another surprise. Our players were good. We took the chance when we got it. I asked the players to fight for each ball and they did. Our serves and defense made the difference," Iranian coach Julio Velasco said after the game, the FIVB official website reported.
Iran's last participation in the FIVB World Cup was in 1991, when it ranked 11th overall.
The top three finishers of this year's tournament will be awarded with tickets to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Iranian national volleyball team has created a great buzz around the world after defeating Serbia the European Champion 3-2 at FIVB World Cup competition yesterday in Japan.
This marks Iran's second victory after defeating the host country Japan 3-1 before losing to Cuba 3-0.
At the conclusion of yesterday's game against Serbia Poria Fiazi was named the MVP of the match.
Iran will face Poland on Thursday -- Poland has won all its three matches. There are 12 teams in this competition and at its conclusion the top 3 teams will qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Iran's Pourya Fayazi after winning as the Most Impressive Player of the match
Nagoya, Japan, November 22, 2011 -- Iran's Pourya Fayazi Damnabi made an impressive debut at the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup against European champions Serbia.
Fayazi represented Iran at the FIVB Volleyball Men's Junior World Championship in Brazil and served as the captain at the FIVB Volleyball Boy's World Championship in Argentina.
The 18-year old came in as a substitute in the second set and stayed on as a starter until the deciding set. Fayazi nailed the final point on his attack and posted an 11-point output that was key to Iran's surprise upset of the stronger Serbian side.
Teammate Mehdi Mahdavi and coach Julio Velasco are satisfied with Fayazi's debut. His performance in his first match did not only make his team proud but also justified his bright future.
