This is the case we made for Tom W. It's extra-extra long with a really cool new feature. This is the first hard case we have made for a client with a removable interior in the cassette-style. I have to say it like that because we did make a dealer case with removable boards. But that was simply a reconfigure of our butterfly boards. This one is revolutionary in cue cases as far as I know.

I want to give credit to Jack Justis, Jay Flowers/Nora Van Horn and Dennis Swift for the idea. Those case makers have always made cases where the interior tubes are easy to remove from the top. But their cases then fit loosely around the tubes which always bothered me personally. So all my hard cases have been made so that the interior tubes and the outer skin fit snugly together and the tubes are not removable from the top. This has worked well enough for 20 years except in the relatively rare situations where something is wrong inside the case and it has to be taken apart to find and correct the problem.

So Jack made a comment that he makes the interior easy to remove so that the customer can easily switch it out if he needs to. While I think that Jack made it loose to be able to insert it easily for himself I still think that the idea of being easily removable for maintenance is a good one. But I can't deal with the skin being loose.

So I worked up a different solution. The skin and the tube are tight and bonded together and the interior slides in securely. The end result is that the interior looks and functions just like we have always done them but if for any reason the user needs to remove it then it slides right out easily with just a little effort.

I hope to make this a standard on all of our cases. Naturally it is more work but the end result is a better case for us and for the user. Thank you to Tom for being our first customer to allow us to experiment on.

For your case I have included two interiors. One is a 4x8 UltraPad and the other is a 3x6 with a large cavity for your extension. We hope that you will be very happy with this case and that it serves you well for many years to come.

  • Really great ideas, John! I like the top pocket ideas -- where the lid flops down like those old computer floppy disk cases. The chalk "shelf" is neat, but is that magnet-based -- i.e. the chalk cube has to have a small metal clip clamped onto it (like those magnetic belt chalk holders) that is attracted to the case's/shelf's embedded magnet?

  • @sfleinen Yes the shelf is magnet based because the customer uses the magnetic chalk holders exclusively. The way it works is that at the shelf there is a magnet row to attract the chalk held in the metal sheathes. And just above it is a metal piece that holds the belt portion of the chalk holder since it has a magnet.
