Also, thinking about it: taking into account current Naval philosophy and weapons, these ships would be huge targets. They would be seen by the target's radar way before the target gets into range of the battleship's guns and the current wire guided MK-48(ADCAP) torpedo could easily take out one of these battleships with one shot. (I.E. It does not make contact with the ship, but uses water compression to break the back of the ship and they have a lot more firepower then WW2 torpedoes.)
Sadly and realistically they won't ever be called upon. None of them went in for upgrades, through one did go in for restoration of older gear that currently floats as a museum. Also, keep in mind: no one makes the shells for the guns anymore, nor the gun powder, plus what we got is getting worse every year. Also, the Navy has said they will never reactivate them with only congressmen pushing to keep them around. In today's economy: it is cheaper to build new ships then to bring them back.
Two are kept on a the reserve list at a time, as far as what I have read online, (I could be wrong here) all four have went in for upgrades an maintainance. Yes they are not fuel efficient, accidents happen all the time, the new USS Enterprise had a devastating deck accint that could have sunk here years ago. And as a Tax payer, those ships are our insurance policy. I truly believe that they will be called upon again to serve our county
Actually at least two of them have been removed from the list and are now museums and the other two are being prepared to be removed also. As much as it would be cool to keep them around, there is no way they'll ever be reactivated again and those who post that they are on a list or will be reactivated are wishful thinkers. A) it is cost prohibitive to reactivate them, B) they are gas guzzlers compared to modern ships, and C) the USS Iowa accident highlighted the dangers of reactivating them.
the National Defense Authorization Act 2007, requiring the battleships be kept and maintained in a state of readiness should they ever be needed again.[28] Congress has ordered that the following measures be implemented to ensure that, if need be, Iowa and Wisconsin can be returned to active duty:
Unfortunatly the problem with the iowa's isnt that the armor or guns can work in todays world. But the innards of the ship are rotten and they stopped making parts decades ago.
So unfortunatly there going to stay out of service.
Y ou really NEED to change the music for this,like some Nickleback or something like that.

@brothejr That goes for any other ship, and while the Iowa's are obsolete, a new battleship with modern systems would actually be very powerful.

@valcan321
That's incorrect. The insides of the Iowas are in VERY good shape.
