DESPOJOS DE UNA PARTIDA
for electronics, piano and video
/Composed by Matías Hancke & Juan Ignacio Guerra. Leonor Hirsch Award. Centro Cultural Recoleta. Buenos Aires, Argentina. 10.22.08
Ana Foutel, piano

Program notes:

The work of "Despojos de una partida" is based on two main concepts: the first one is an oscillation between concrete and synthetic elements that allowes a constant and subtle counterpoint between the musical and visual components. At some moments, this correspondence is evident, while at some other moments it is presented in an almost subliminal way, in order to expand the limits of both the levels of perception and audience's expectation. The second core concept was the piano, which, to some extent, is the first and last link from respectively the concrete and synthetic materials (due to the way that it was used). The title of the piece alludes directly to the use of the piano: a performance with no remains of traditional activities is to be found, its participation of the game is focused in those last sounds produced by the excitation of a string. Thus, all three elements (electronic music, piano and video) need each other in order to persist organically and to acquire meaning.
