  • bud and my father grew up in Ny . they nearly killed each other in a homemade ironclad reacting civil war battles. rip uncle bud.

  • @apbIII

I'm sure many people would be interested in seeing any old photos you may have of your father and Bud in their youth

  • Thanks for doing this, pjacobo. It's a great companion to my B&T version. I know the Gateway Singers, probably had an album way back, but didn't remember this, so it's a nice surprise for me. Fascinating to hear the differences between this and the B&T version. I like Travis's plaintive tone in this one, which is more so than in the other, though the long sustained falsetto notes in the B&T (from both of them) are addictive.

Also makes me sad that Travis is gone-and Bud too for that matter.

  • @liandro

@liandro I'm glad you enjoyed it. Apparently Travis sang this version when he was about 25 (not his late 20's as I had noted in this video), so this may be Travis' earliest recorded version of Malaguena Salerosa.

p.s. The photo in the video is the Hacienda del Sol in Taos, New Mexico where I stayed a couple years ago. One wonders whether Travis himself ever stayed here.

  • @liandro I hope you look/listen to my other Gateway Singer videos (all from the same album The Gateway Singers in HiFi - this is the only solo on the album, and Travis was the youngest member of the group at the time)

  • Travis was and is a close friend. I studied under his tutoring for a year. He shared so many stories, and taught me so much about music. I think this version of this song is the most beautiful. Tom Straw has a website up for Bud and Travis, its an excellent site. Google Bud and Travis.

  • Good

  • @pjacobo Yes, his voice is clearly "young." Trying to send you a private message, can't figure out how. Do you know?

  • @pjacobo I'll check them out. I know I used to have this album, now that I think about it. I was an avid collector of these folk albums in the early 60's, sadly most are gone.

  • Since a friend introduced me to the duo....they have been part of my life. This song is one of my all time favorities...haunts me. Travis passing on is a deep loss for his fans and family...but he and Bud will always live on as we spread their music to younger generations...I do every chance I get
