GOING TO THE BUSTLING MAHANE YEHUDA MARKET, A QUINTESSNTIAL ISRAELI EXPERIENCE, AND ENDING THE DAY WITH A PRAYER
Chas, Ryan, Sun and Dan began their weekend in Israel at Jerusalem's Museum on the Seam. This proved to be a most interesting experience for the four, who were exposed to Israel's acknowledgement of the social and domestic issues facing its population on a daily basis. Soon after, the bloggers were introduced to the Mahane Yehuda market in the heart of the capital. Here they took part in a volunteering service that aims to alleviate the physical burden of elderly shoppers called, "Lady with Bags." The group was given a tour of the market where many of Jerusalem's population arrive weekly to bargain for the best prices and produce. Finally, the bloggers received a detailed lecture by Uri Amedi about Israeli society and the issues Jerusalem has been facing since the Six-Day War (1967). After a brief rest, Sun, Dan, Chas and Ryan were escorted by the Once in a Lifetime Team to Jerusalem's Kol Rina synagogue for a touching Friday night service followed by a celebratory Sabbath meal at their apartment.
Friday seemed to be an interesting day for the group that was exposed to several components of Jerusalem's society and culture. The bloggers enjoyed helping out market shoppers as Sun made sure to greet every one of them with, "Shabbat Shalom!"
During the lecture on life in Jerusalem, Dan asked Amedi how he can best communicate the complexity of the city to his readers. The group discussed the similarities between Israel's capital and other cities around the world. This perhaps laid the grounds for Sun's analysis that while Chinese may dream their whole lives of certain objectives little is done, and in contrast, Israelis tend to do something towards implementing their dreams.
