Ashita J. Tolwani, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of ICU Nephrology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, presented "Acute Kidney Injury: A Growing Threat" on May 16, 2013.
The talk focused on defining AKI and reviewing the pathophysiology and epidemiology of AKI in ICU patients, identifying early signs of renal impairment based on laboratory and diagnostic tools and procedures, discussing the indications for and appropriate timing of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the ICU and risk factors and strategies to prevent and manage AKI, and reviewing the current knowledge of the critical elements of the RRT prescription: modality, dose, and anticoagulation.
