This is definitely not for FILMMAKERS. This is for amateur VIDEO MAKERS. If you are serious about making FILMS (regardless of whether you shoot on DV or 35mm or anything in-between) ignore 'instructional' videos like this, they will teach you the WRONG WAY to do things and cause you more trouble then it's worth. There are plenty of good books, DVDs and workshops out there that will help you do things properly, which in the end will be easier and look 100 times better.

Pro cam stuff, what are you talking about? A pro would never mention the word "Gain" or "Auto Focus". This video was elementary at best, the correct way for night lighting is with a HMI and a bounce card, and the only direct lighting would just be for the rim. If someone watching this video didn't know what they were talking about, they could simply ad a question in the comment section. No matter what video you end up watching on youtube, you can almost bet its at an amateur level.

Horror scene.....USES RED GEL!!!! XD

@owlpaw8 Yes but a lot of the comments seem to indicate that people are actually looking for guidance on filmmaking. Either way it's not very helpful and is teaching ways to do things badly, or just plain giving you incorrect and unhelpful information, regardless of whether you are a filmmaker or videomaker.

Thanks Mark. My friend Annie Pattison and I are making a video and Annie wants to shoot at night. Her first attempt didn't workout so well. She was outside by mountains, river rapids, pine trees... really beautiful... at dusk... and everything was too dark. I suppose she'd need a generator with lights on her out in the wilderness... or use the video cameras light. Thanks for the tips.

@TheHandOfFear any tips on books, dvds?

reds definitely dont have night vision and bear grylls doesn't use that camera...

Bear Grylls' Production haves a big professional camera (I think it might be a RED) that includes night vision. No trick there!
And don't forget about shooting 'day for night'. A good book to read is "Painting With Light", by John Alton. Some may say the information is dated, but it's still valid. I don't think the physics of light have changed much in the last 50 years.

Excellent points. Check out our video "Outdoor Lighting for Video," it has a nice little section on shooting Day For Night...
