Oh, and perhaps a tip. Instead of sagging at the waist, you need to get your hips up to the rope. This moves your center of gravity. The most difficult part of doing this is staying on your feet when you take so much rope from the other team :-)

Hey, for what it is worth, I am a Sig Ep alum from NIU (86). We used to do stand up tugs, but I think we changed in 1983 and went to the trenches. Most of what I've seen of the current standing tug is similar to what was done back in the 70's and early 80's.
As mentioned, both styles are still a tug-of-war, but as someone who did it both ways, the trenches are...as others have called it....violent. Going to the trenches, in my opinion, was the next step.

NIU Tugs is the real deal. I am a 1993 NIU Phi Sig Grad and I tugged for three seasons. You all need to take a lesson from NIU if you want to move this sport forward. NIU Kicks Ass, nuff said.

Hey, NIU tuggers... Let's not be rude. It is clear that NIU tugs is far more agressive, violent and impactful than EIU-style tugs. The best analogy I can think of is the difference between flag football and full contact football with helmets and pads. Are they both "football"? Yes, of course. But full pads/full contact football is in a completely different realm of intensity and contact. I won't be able to take EIU tugs seriously until they dig trenches, get some leverage and start hittin
