  • "What you want is MIcrosoft to become Apple and that's just not going to happen..."

Actually, I did hear rumors about Microsoft planning to build a computer of their own to run Windows, but it's only a rumor, but I can't really confirm it. It's said that Microsoft has established a factory in India where they will start production of these computers. However it's just a rumor so I could be wrong most likely.

  • Granted that if Apple licensed OSX to non-Apple computers, their market share would grow, but would unfortunately suffer a big trade-off and that would be the quality of its OS. Apple would have to redesign Mac OS X to conform to different kinds of hardware. Over ten years ago Apple tried to go the way of Microsoft and it nearly killed them until Steve Jobs returned.

  • Correction: "that are more likely to make the switch to windows" = "that are more likely to make the switch to Mac".

  • I firmly believe that this is the reason why Apple will never have the highest market share. But the truth of the matter is, that's not what they want, because otherwise they would have made OS/X fully compatible with PC hardware and that's exactly what they refuse and always will refuse.

  • Yes, you're right and that's exactly the reason why lots of users stick to windows and it's those who don't care about hardware choices that are more likely to make the switch to windows. Building your own PC is a much bigger business than a lot people think! While not everybody builds their own PC, there are still millions of amateurs and professionals who build PCs on request, ANY kind of PC.

  • "this becomes overwhelming in my perspective"

No, only if all that hardware would have to be supported by a single company that writes the drivers, but that's not the case, each hardware vendor writes their own drivers or makes use of exiting drivers like you see for example with Intel chipset drivers.

  • Apple has targeted the consumers and designed the iMac and the MacBooks. These computers are limited in hardware expansion, and their designs aren't configured the way Mac Pros are for easy upgrades. Reason being? Because these computers don't focus on customizability as they are meant to be simple in design for the consumers to use and become productive. The most you can do with these Macs is upgrade RAMs and hard drives.

  • For Windows to support all kinds of hardware, it needs to be designed generically and since there are several OEMs out there in the market, one must find the right combination for Windows to work decently as much as possible IMO. From this point on, configurations may be necessary for both hardware and software, but the majority consumers aren't going to know how to do that exactly.

  • "Perhaps the main problem with WinPCs is Microsoft's way of approaching the computer market."

That's not a problem, as long as the vendors bring out descent drivers. Actually this astronomical choice (=freedom) of hardware that you have on the PC platform is what makes UNIX, Linux and Windows the most popular operating systems ever. What you want is Microsoft to become Apple and that's just not going to happen, people want that freedom.

  • And with all these combinations which Vista will work with which OEM brand hardware, or in cases, custom-built hardware, this becomes overwhelming in my perspective. Apple however controls both hardware and software, they can integrate both of them seamlessly because they can make sure that both interact properly. Now what would be the trade-off in vertical architeture? That because much of the hardware was designed by Apple, the Macs are not going to be as customizable as PCs are. (cont'd)
