After having some weird allergic reactions to various foods, I finally went to go see an allergist. I didn't think I was allergic to much, but about 2 minutes after the "prick test" was done, I learned otherwise. My arm was itching like mad!

A prick test is a series of tiny punctures or pricks made into the patient's skin. Small amounts of suspected allergens and/or their extracts (pollen, grass, mite proteins, peanut extract, etc.) are introduced to sites on the skin marked with pen or dye (the ink/dye should be carefully selected, lest it cause an allergic response itself). A small plastic or metal device is used to puncture or prick the skin.

It turned out I have OAS. Oral allergy syndrome is a type of food allergy typified by a cluster of allergic reactions in the mouth in response to eating certain (usually fresh) fruits, nuts, and vegetables that typically develops in adult hay fever sufferers. The most common reaction is an itching or burning sensation in the lips, mouth, and/or pharynx. Sometimes other reactions can be triggered in the eyes, nose, and skin. Swelling of the lips, tongue, and uvula and a sensation of tightness in the throat may be observed. Seldom it can result in anaphylaxis.

  • Yep I have it too and it sucks esp when trying to diet and eat healthy. I recently tried Medifast diet which I had a reaction to as I had no clue soy was included in my allergy list. bleh!

  • @kirbykazi14 Yeah I have the same thing. I don't have it with Vitamin C though. If you don't know what "Greens" is, it may be a better substitute for the fruits and veggies you can't eat. I've had it before and even though it's not the greatest tasting stuff in the world, it has a lot of stuff in it that's just as good and better than eating raw fruits and veggies.

Just thought, as one OAS sufferer to another, I'd try and help ya out :)

  • I've had OAS since I was seven (or sooner, that's when I had the test) and it's quite annoying. Sometimes people have come up to me and say, (when I was smaller) "Wow! You're so lucky you can't eat fruits and vegetables! I hate them!"

And I just went on a website today that said the cure for allergies is vitamin C. Which I'm allergic to. I'm stuck drinking juice.

  • ahh... frightening memories of prick tests.. Ive had OAS since I was 8 years old (Im 25 now).. Gotta admit, it sucks not being able to eat raw fruits or vegetables.. especially when ur trying to go for a healthy diet... cooking everything usually works for me.. except with nuts.. cant eat those at all..

  • hey hi, i was just lookin for this, i have a smiler problem but i dunn understand what it is, are u sure its allergic problem,, pls do reply back..

    regads, tkre bye

  • Did this hurt? I have to go in Monday and get it done all over my back :(

  • I'm allergic to pollen. I didn't have a serious reaction, but I had little bumps all over my arms. I was a kid, didn't know any better, but I had let a caterpillar crawl on my arm.
