Catalytic Synesthesia

String Quartet written in 2008, revised in 2009. This is the revised version as recorded by the NZSQ at the NZSM String Quartet Workshop 2009.

The three sections are labeled Relentless, Majestic and Disjointed. The idea in the work was to use the string quartet as one full sound. Starting with a canon (time-shifted unison), then rhythmic unison and then rhythmic unison unravelling, all while playing a series of related tone rows, which throughout the piece become heard less as 4 lines are more a monophonic phrases, but 4 notes at a time, as they are heard repeatedly in the cannon, then as recurring motifs in unison and finally in gestural manner.
