From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Jim Kirchherr rides along with the St. Louis County Problem Property Unit as they inspect empty homes in the Spanish Lake neighborhood. An unincorporated municipality, Spanish Lake has no mayor or city hall, but does have an active community association which is trying to address the problem of abandoned home in the area, many the result of the foreclosure crisis. The Problem Property Unit and community association look for signs of neglect, yard waste, gang graffiti, or break-ins and attempt to clean up the properties whenever possible with the help of organizations like Neighbors Assisting Neighbors.

  • I remember when this was a poor white neighborhood. It was clean and crime free. Now that it's a poor black neighborhood it's dirty and crime ridden.

  • All black = all ghetto

  • @kimjcmurphy Christian Northeast is one of the worst hospitals in Missouri. If I needed emergency treatment I would rather go all the way to DePaul then go to Christian Northeast.

  • no uneducated ghetto trash morans in St. Charles

  • This is a great story. My hats off to these fine people in helping reclaim this area. I hope they made progress.

  • I have white friends that are moving back to Spanish Lake. Of course, they don't have kids or need immediate medical care, even though Christian Northeast is at their back door.

All brick homes, beautiful yards, property... Come on, people, have pride in YOUR neighborhood. It USED to be mine.

  • Nobody wants to live around the hoods. Get rid of them, you fix spanish lake. All of north city moved into spanish lake. look at it now.

  • Once you cross the river into St. Charles, it's nothing but lazy, stuck up yuppies. "ejchameleon" is right, all North St. Louis needs is some people to care and put some time and effort into it.

  • Doesn't anybody care anymore- what is wrong with our society-????
