Outdoor test of Flip UltraHD vs Kodak ZX5 vs Sony Bloggie.

Flip immediately disappointed me as the image stabilization seems non existent and the 720p is almost laughable and barely better than standard definition. Yes I know they are no longer in production, probably a good thing!

The Kodak ZX5 picture was not bad in the outdoor test, though the audio has a lot to be improved upon. I think RealPlayer streamed better audio over 56k modems in 1996. It is mono to boot! the picture is pretty close to maximum contrast though, which may look ok on a computer, but it is WAY beyond broadcast limits. While this can be worked on in post sometimes the extreme ends don't play nice to correction. One huge advantage the ZX5 had over the others though was its macro focus. Good luck getting extreme closeups with the other cameras!

The Bloggie had a nice wide angle picture. Straight up the contrast SEEMED little flat compared to the ZX5, but everything was in broadcast limits making this a better choice if you are going to be using your videos other places besides online. The audio was also much better than the ZX5, and seemed to cut down on the wind noise more than the other 2 cameras. There does seem to be a clicking noise, and it seems to get louder as the picture gain starts to increase in darker areas. I am not sure if this is normal or if I just have a defective camera. The image stabilization on this camera also beats the others.

Overall I like the bloggie the best if I can figure out why the audio clicks so much. The Flips picture is just too soft, and image stabilization non-existent. The Kodak is definitely something i may do down the road for a trip that involves some swimming, and the outdoor picture is nice! But beyond that, the audio is a huge drawback.

  • im still not sure which to get the sony or the kodak. in the last shot the kodak seems better

  • @masterofpop I will be doing a lower light comparison next weekend. The Kodak is great for macro shots, but then again how many macro shots would the average person be doing with a pocket camera? Also this video does not really show off the sound. The Kodak has horrid mono audio compared to the Sony. Both cameras have their uses though!

  • Thanks. The Flip seems to do a horrible job agisnt these two. I found the Kodak to be much better the video quality, the Sony was good too. The last shot Kodak kicked ass!

    Ya,really ..!!!

  • 1:03 Bloggie :)

  • Excellent comparison video! The Kodak ZX5 is one of the better portable cameras on the market today. There's one problem with the ZX5--when submerged, the doors tend to get stuck! I made a video on how to prevent this from happening! Check out my "how to prevent the Kodak ZX5 doors from getting stuck". Have a good time filming!

  • @gonzalorivarola Kodak is one of the original film and camera companies. They know what they're doing when it comes to producing cameras. I just bought the Kodak playsport zx5 today. Excellent mini camcorder!

  • cant go wrong with kodak, just bough mine today and im loving it.!

  • Well if you take the kodak, you'll have one that is water and shock proof :D

  • here's the link to see the "fish eye" attachment for wide angle viewing on Kodak - youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=mfj2Y1RsJQQ

  • You can buy a lens for the Kodak Zx5 that provides for the wide angle affect. I saw them at best buy and there is a video on youTube that shows how it works. It's easy to attach and detach. Sorry, can't remember where that video is ... I too had an issue with sound being quite low on playback and am investigating. I have the previous model (Zx3) and Kodak seems to have improved the image stabilization some ... The Zx5 is not that much of an improvement over Zx3.

  • I think the sony bloggie duo would be the best for vlogging because it zooms out a lot and has a screen on the front so you can see yourself. The Kodak would be the best for any outdoor stuff like mountain biking and swimming because it is waterproof and shock resistent and the flip is the best for nothing

  • thnx just bought zx5. though sony has a wider angle it seems

  • kodak rules!!!!!!!!

  • I have a Kodak playsport ZX5 and i observed that sony bloggie is better because it brings out more natural colors.

  • Kodak ZX5 looks the best!

  • seems like the sony had better sound and nice video quality.

thanks for the vid. Good thing i didnt get a Flip. That's just looks terribad..

  • Thw winner is the Kodak ZX5. And its Waterproof. Come on!!!

  • Thanks for the video. I wish the sony wouldve been right after the kodak during the video since the flip is obviously much worse than those two. Thanks though.

  • @leproduction ya but can you film without the kodak in a huricane?

  • @guyNbluejeans Actually I meant to say the Sony did a better job with the park truck shot. Other than that, it looks like the Kodak did better with the stones and the dandelion.

  • Thanks Much for helping us folks trying to sort out which one to get. I kinda like the Kodak but I've read so many owners saying they've had issues with the things freezing up. I don't know anything about the Sony you showed here but will Google it. It did look like that in one area it beat out the Kodak was in that evening shot with the parked truck. Again, thanks!

  • The sony seems to be the best here. Sharp. And it's image stabilisation is also quite good.

The detail between the sony and kodak is close, but when it comes to how it handles light, the sony doesn't compromise as much detail as does the kodak. The kodak is more washed out with too much glare whereas the sony balances the light and detail relatively well.

The flip ultra should be renamed, 'flip to the next pocket video cam quick'.

  • Wow, after reading all the rave reviews for the Flip UltraHD, your comparison shows that it's actually the worst of the three. It was the weakest camera in all of the tests, especially when you were scanning over the rocks

  • Kodak 0:12 Flip HD 0:23 Bloggie 0:35
