The Waste Land (TS Eliot) - Desert Experience

These verses from The Waste Land use Biblical images to mirror the poet's experience of despair and his struggle for meaning and faith. He alludes to the Passion of Christ, to the Post-Crucifixion Malaise of the Apostles, to Wandering in the Desert, and to the appearance of the Risen Jesus on the Road to Emmaus. The Incarnation as a sign of hope and light and life were further explored in Eliot's later poetry, such as Ash Wednesday, Choruses from the Rock, and Four Quartets.

I like it! But I have to remark: the ascending intonation adds some sort of curiosity which seems to me to clash with the lines themselves. for example: if there were ROCK and also WATER. if there were the sound of water ONLY. sounds too conclusive and too much like a question, especially compared to T S Eliot's own reading of his work which seems to roll on and on
