This song by Karen Chandler was her only hit. Mel Carter also did this one in 1965.

  • Give me the Mel Carter version

  • @is1531 Mel's version is posted all over YouTube, and you should have no trouble finding them. I tried to list 3 sites, but YouTube gave me an error.

For me, it's not a question of who has the best version. I'm just happy that I have Karen's version and could post it so that others can enjoy it as well.

  • I remember Karen Chandler and this song

and wondered when someone would post it?

    Thanks.

  • Another song I posted which you might like is Ivory Tower by Cathy Carr.

  • I was dating someone when Mel Carter's version came out in 1965. I DO know what that lines "but they never stood in the dark with you love" and "take me in your arms and drive me slowly out of my mind" mean, first hand. Yes. Thanks, Micki. Wherever you are. Whenever I find you, again.

  • I do agree with all positive comments about Karen and her era. I'm not ashamed to say that today is just non-existing if compared to the forties till the mid-60's. It's not a matter of age, but one of reality: violence, brainwashing sex showing on all kinds of media, disregarding for the children and the aged with all that's in between and a 99 percent of music leading to alienation and loss of one's conscience and dignity.

Yes, stop the world, I wanna get off, but we just have to take it.

  • Wikipedia says she reached the top 40 with "Goodbye Charlie, Goodbye" in 1953 and that her final solo hit "Why?" reached the charts in 1954.

  • I wondered what happened (as I often do) to this star of the past, and discovered by way of an obituary that she had died. I then checked Wikipedia and it didn't mention her death, so I edited that information.

  • Thanks for posting the original. This is absolutely one of my favourite songs and this is the only version I like.

  • nice to hear the original

  • Thanks for posting this "original" version of this song. Sometimes they're very hard to find!

  • @Richardironheart you are absolutely right, We just have to take it. However, it is great that we have YouTube so we can listen to what is truly great, and for all the young people out there, so they can discover this fine music

    .

  • @coyotesong Anything by The California Ramblers Sam Lanin Orchestra, THe Ben Selvin Orchestra (Selvin, incidently is in the Guiness Book Of World Records for the most sales of records on78rpm in the teens and 20s) , Leonard Joys' The High Hatters the "house band " for the Victor Talking Machine Company) . These are all 1920s whosr main repertoire was "Hot Jazz" By chance have you ever heard of Ian Whitcomb?? He was a British rock star, who ended up reviving many 1920s hits.

  • @63filmbuff Happy Birthday (a day late)!! And thanks for your reply. Just an FYI, I love early blues and Hank Williams. I also like a lot of but not all classical. I love the harpsicord. I enjoy medieval chants. But try as I might, I just find the big band sound cheesy. Don't know why, I just do. What are your favorites from the early 20th century?

  • @coyotesong I just turned 48 yesterday .I can listen to just about everything recorded from the early 20th century to the early 1980s with equal appreciation. The thrill of discovery of material recorded years, and I mean years, before I was born in 1963 , and the fact that I can honestly say that I enjoy it has been one of the true joys of my life.Of course I listened to what was popular, when I was in school, but after High School graduation in 1981. I discovered the older material

  • @63filmbuff I'm certainly curious as to how old you are. I have NEVER liked the big band sound....not as a little tyke watching TV sitting on the living room floor or as a kid who got excited by early rock and roll and on to the Beatles and other Brit bands. As for your last line, yes, I detest the big band sound. I definitely know so. I get it that you don't.
