This scene proves why De Niro is so highly respected still after his nowadays comedy´s. Like his character change at 1:32.

Agree, but Scorsese claims he threw that quote in there because of one of his teachers and that it isn't specifically related to the film.
Schrader isn't a fan of it. He thinks it implies redemption, and doesn't believe that Lamotta even came close to achieving it.

You guys are looking into the last quote too much. All it's meant is that he was "blinded" by his own selfish pride and was too arrogant to see how he was hurting the people he cared about the most. And now many years later when he is all alone he comes to terms with that. But it's too late the damage has been done.

beautiful ending.
I wonder Jake was still blind?
although he lost his brother and family and i thought he regrets, is he still blind?

Such a great scene. Choosing that famous line to recite from On The Watefront when Marlon Brando's character (also a boxer at one time) confonts his brother about letting him take a fall and regretting it. Where De Niro's character (Lamotta) had a similar experiance with his brother (played by Joe Peci). This is what makes this movie great.
