Don't say I don't listen to opinions/requests :P

I found a code that I could use to modify the number of lives I have. Turning it on and off let's me set the live count I have, without fixing it to that number. So basically at the start of each recording (kinda leaning on that rather than each star, since I have to interrupt things then) I will set the starting lives to 99, and let them run down from there as I do stuff. That way, as the requester said in the last video you get to see exactly how many lives I lost on a particular star (though I show all deaths normally anyway so whatever), and I don't have to waste any time in getting back to an area because I lost the default 4 lives. I also can go right back into the action every time because I don't have to "farm" that one life box too, speeding up recordings a bit. Which always helps.

Anyhow, this level was mostly everything I expected it to be. Some cute references, and it was basically the original's Course 7 but harder and smaller. Like most places in this game. Yeah, if I was to have one criticism about this game so far it would be that most of the areas are much too compact compared to the original - this is largely a result of every single level being a 1-map entity, whereas in the original many maps had a second area to them. Like the volcano in Course 7, the house in Course 4, the igloo in Course 10 etc.

Still, this area had its fair share of dangerous stuff. Lava is a tricky thing to work around, since you lose a LOT of health for touching it and it kills your control severely. Fire is also a bit problem for the same reasons. Combine the two and it can be tough to stay alive if you get hit. Still, the level is good fun, although I'm confused as to how to get the rest of the stars! Except red coin I guess, I think I saw about 6 or 7 of those around.

  • For the record, I will not hesitate to delete comments which I deem blatant trolling/flaming. As we've seen here. I have no time to waste on idiots, and it ruins the mood for those who actually want to comment with something useful.

This is different from real criticism though. Stuff like AGrayPhantom did at the start of the LP is welcome, pointing out "redundancies" that were almost entirely showing stuff off/finishing thoughts is not.

Trolls will be blocked from commenting. No exceptions.

  • Oh, never mind, I suppose it could've been in SMRPG as well.

  • @HozukiHangetsu: Kib also told me it was Magma Mountain from Mario Party. I guess the two songs are just really similar, since it sounded like SMRPG to me. I think you're right though.

  • oh you did that for me? you're much nicer than any girlfriend i ever had <3!

  • @Almisael1: Whilst I'm not generally into the whole "taking requests" thing, this one had an actual benefit for me as well. That was probably not what you intended from your suggestion, but when I thought about it I saw the usefulness it could potentially have. SO I figured I might as well :P

As I said in the description, I typically do listen to feedback/requests, it's just I don't always implement the requests unless it will in my opinion improve the series. Like here.

'this one had an actual benefit for me as well. That was probably not what you intended'

to be honest: it was, because i counted the seconds it took you to get the 1up in the hub-room after each death and i thought it would help you if you didn't have to do that again. And it helps the 'gameflow' of the LP!

  • @Almisael1: Indeed... and most of those were the "best" runs of getting that life too - back when I was doing course 12 it often took me 3-4 times the number of attempts to get that extra life. With the way the walls are there, it is tricky to get a handle on the direction you have to wall-kick in to get up there.

  • I kind of dig how the levels are pretty compact, actually. It's like every area and section is meaningful in some capacity.

Also lava rising is pretty rad

  • Ooh! Almost forgot! Fun fact about the hot lava level from the original Mario64 game:

The fella who does most of the music for the Mario games, Koji Kondo, was given a direction from Shigeru Miyamoto. After hearing Kondo's piece, Miyamoto told him that it was exactly how he imagined it. That was the first time Miyamoto ever said that to Kondo.

  • You showed some real skill in this episode. Don't ever let anyone tell you you're bad at video games, Cal :-)

    And thanks for the shout-out.

  • @Nanospark5 Ha ha! So true! My favorite part of the episode!

  • @raocow Layer 2 action, Mr. Raocow? ;-)

  • 16:42 "Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha". It sounded like Mario was laughing at you.

  • Hey cal are you now recording this game on your new rig? yet

  • The level music = Magma Mountain from Mario Party 1.
