After a lot of hard decision making on which Linux Distro to install, my final decision went to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Here I show off just a few things I did after in the install was finished.

  • I think I might have to stop using Ubuntu because of how integrated pulseaudio is getting into it. I'm a KDE user and prefer ALSA and Phonon because there are a lot less issues for me with recording devices and programs like Skype or kdenlive. I'm either going to go with Arch (I hope not, it's time consuming to install), Fedora, or Debian Testing/Unstable. :( I hope they fix that headphone problem, I haven't had issues with headphones until this version.

  • @RPCJerkobi Any luck yet with the headphone thing? I have just had to deal with it. But when I HAVE to use headphones, then I re-boot into Windows 7. That shouldn't be the case, but it is.

  • about your audio problem. update your asla drivers to 1.0.23 they support more cards. I have updated my alsa from 1.0..22 to 1.0.23 and the sound card would work great. and will mute speakers on headphones and so on. if you want to know how to do it let me know. ill pm you my instructions. it would take 15 minutes or more depending on ur computer. its compiling teh drivers from source.

  • @Raja221 I downloaded the Alsa 1.0.23 file and wondering how to execute to my machine now and make the headphone jacks work. I'm working in Mint 9.

  • Have you thought about using any other distro other than a ubuntu variant?

  • @codebean I think about other distros a lot. Although, a lot of less known release distos still perform like in beta stage. Plus I have a hard time transferring their ISO's to a bootable USB. All Ubuntu's no problem whatsoever. I have used DVD discs with other Linux, like Fedora, Mandriva and Suse, but I always keep swaying to Ubuntu. Fedora is harder to find help with. Which one do you like you use?

  • I remember that I use Alsa from a terminal long time ago that's how I fixed know afther 1 year I forgot how I'read 5-6 forums untill know & still didn't find it, that is why windows is the easyeast os to use, mac on a pc it's even more truble than this. I will be able to fix a blue screen in windows not that I have any , but still I will fix it in a few seconds instead a kernel panic where restore doesen't work.

  • What are your thoughts about pclinuxos?

  • windows? reliable? lulwut

  • Btw if you want to keep windows on your computer to make it easy to install and keep windows, Just click the ubuntu exe file and it will ask you if you want to install inside of windows and it lets you pic the amount of hdd space you want it to use. Then when you boo the computer, it will let you pick ubuntu or windows. and it is also very easy to uninstall.

  • Its fixed now!

  • Just loaded Ubuntu 10.04 Got the disc and the book at the public library. I was impressed by how easy it was to install and the cost $0(zero dollars). Tons of softwares and applications to download from internet. I haven't had any problems yet but it was kind of scary leaving windows. I don't know why I didn't change sooner.

  • @JoshHartNow But my desktop with 512 MB ram that's really old ran better than my laptop which has 1GB ram

  • @LuigiKat11 I think you just need to upgrade your RAM.

  • @JoshHartNow yep

  • @LuigiKat11 Hmmmm, mine was XP....Was your Vista a service pack 1?

  • @JoshHartNow Vista

  • @LuigiKat11 Hmmm, what operating system was the computer before you switched to 11.04 then to 10.04?

  • @JoshHartNow Did you not understand me? I said that GNOME 3 is slow because it requires more RAM

  • @LuigiKat11 Wait, what?

  • @JoshHartNow I use 10.04 because GNOME 3 is so laggy

  • I am happy with Ubuntu, but I do not use 10.04. I use 11.04. It is way better.

  • That is really strange I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and I never had such an issue with my headphones or microphone in fact everything works for my. The stereo speekers and headphones, the internal microphone and a plugged one. I don't know if you gave ubuntu another try after you had this experience but if you didn't I would say it is about time you gave it another chance. I use it as my main OS on both my desktop and laptop computers and I couldn't be happier.

  • I'm sorry about your problem. I've been using Ubuntu since 9.10 on several laptops, never had a problem with the headphone jack. There MUST be a driver issue somewhere. An issue, that's very common for some reason.

  • i had the same problem with the head phones im a slackware user slackware 13.1 might have same problem i did open up a terminal and alasasound mixer

arrow keys will move ya around different settings if you see 00 its muted

pres m and in the little box will change 00 or mm by pressing m

my sound was nuted and thats how i got mine back on headphones, etc

  • You've installed awesome into your comptuer hahahahaha. I use BackTrack since i do a lot of pen... testing... But ultimatly you can install anything on any linux. Or just get a version that has most of what you want preinstalled. Ubuntu is the easiest and they have other versions of it in ubuntu :|... but best of luck with your linux and :). grate vid...

  • @gravedigr12 you can use a program called wine. it lets your run MOST windows apps on ubuntu and even let some people play black ops on it. it might work with ubuntu

  • @1maintoshclover Neverheardofatroll.png.tar.7zip

  • install gentoo... oh wait, you have a blog, you must be a faggot.

  • i have a question i want Ubuntu but just to escape the terror of vista 06 but heres my issue i want to use a windows program also referred to as combat arms how can i do this if i can do this

  • I never use headphones unless I use my headset so I'm not entirely sure about the headphone issue. Have you tried your alsamixer? Are you using Alsa or Pulseaudio? I have been using Linux for a good 2 years now and use it for my primary OS and love it. Never have any problems, once you get used to everything you won't want to get rid of it. Good luck with it!

    sudo apt-get install Ubuntu!!
