AFTERLIFE - Part of THE FACTORY PROJECT - September 2008

Afterlife reconfigures Warhol's Silver Factory into the transient space between life and death, as imagined by the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Asking the public to follow simple choreography recorded on i-pods, which was then photographed and projected on the walls of the space, the installation transforms the casual living environment of the loft into a charged theatrical event. A meditation on perception, this installation juxtaposed the experiences of the participant, the viewers and the camera to poignant and, at times, humorous effect. Set to a soundscape of Warhol's musings on art and death -- encompassing everything from Valerie Solanas to the World Trade Centre -- Afterlife becomes a vessel for the ordinary person's expression, transforming the Everyman into a Superstar -- a star that burns even more brightly as it dies.

Afterlife revisite la Silver Factory de Warhol, la situant dans l'espace tranché entre la vie et la mort, tel qu'inspiré par le Livre tibétain des morts. Demandant au public de suivre une simple chorégraphie enregistrée sur des ipods, chorégraphie ensuite photographiée et projetée sur les murs de l'espace de diffusion, l'installation transforme l'espace de vie informel d'un loft en un autre, théâtral, chargé de sens. Une méditation sur la perception, cette installation juxtaposait les expériences du participant, des spectateurs et de la caméra jusqu'à des dénouements intenses, parfois humoristiques. Avec pour trame sonore les réflexions de Warhol sur l'art et la mort - incluant des éléments allant de Valerie Solanas au World Trade Centre - Afterlife se forge comme un médium reflétant les expressions de personnes ordinaires, transformant M. Toutlemonde en Superétoile - une étoile brûlant d'autant plus ardemment qu'elle s'éteint.
