Sidebar on the left is the thing that most people immediately disable.

Really nice. The idea is immediately obvious, and well done for a first sketch. Might even be good for the small screen (e.g. netbook). Go for it!
I finally start looking forward to Gnome 3.0

I'm in love, I'll be checking out this branch later today.

And, do you test _this_ on the small screen? Listen, you are too far from people ;)

Yes actually. I have specifically been designing my branch to work just as well on my 20" widescreen as well as my 7" EeePC 701. This technology demo is very old, currently I am working on the redesign.

All looks horribly complicated to me. I thought the whole point of gnome-shell was that it would be driven by user requirements and iterative testing, rather than just being a showcase of whizzy developer ideas that may or may not bear any resemblance to a more usable desktop?

I think you are jumping the gun here. This is a technology demo of an idea. We are currently discussing what is/isn't going into gnome-shell, how it could/should change. One of the great things with gnome-shell is you can develop an idea like this in a weekend and let people actually see it/use it and give feedback.
Curious, what would you consider a more usable desktop?
