Kids love leaves! we know not everybody has trees or leaves (or Fall!) where they live, so we wanted to share a peaceful Fall wish with you!

Trees don't ask for anything
Happy earth day, Mother earth!!!
We started our global peace project in Fall. All the childrens' favorite thing about Fall was the leaves. But the children have also been studying about permaculture and ecology and the lack of water in Burkina faso, and they also understand how important trees are to the whole world.
We wanted to make a panorama so you could feel what it was like to be here, playing in the leaves. The children drew their outlines on the picture (parts of it got destroyed: it was much larger originally, big enough to go all around a room) They made leaves and trees out of their hands outlines. The children hid messages to our friends who will get the exchange (wherever that may be!) all throughout the painting, messages of peace and fun (look for the word chocolate hidden somewhere and "Its raining peace" raindrops.
The children made up the songs music and sounds and rhythms, ( listen for the gentle dropping sounds, then the howling wind) then they wrote words that captured how they felt about trees and peace and the world, to send their message of peace to you (partially colored by Shel Silversteins sad book about a giving tree: curse you, Shel Silverstein!)

There are really no leaf-blowers around here, but we hope people everywhere will consider not using them: its really more fun to rake and drag and jump (without the loud noise and stinky gas fumes too!)
We played a game where you have to wait for a leaf to fall, then everyone tries to ctch one: very very hard, actually

Have you ever thought how the leaf must feel, looking down at the earth?
For them its not flying up, it's flying down to be with their family

the Wassookeag School's teachers are Debby bell-Smith and Cheryl brown: thanks dai-bai and cheryl!
