What exactly does the 4x4 lock switch do? Is it a diff lock for the front wheels/ back, all?
I've seen some videos that show if 1 wheel is in the air, (off roading) that wheel will spin and not much power is given to the rest. Another video (Subaru biased) shows the Subaru to provide enough power to the wheels that are not slipping to get over a bump, where the Rav4 and Honda CRV fail.

RAV4 means Recreational Active Vehicle w/ 4 wheel drive. CRV means Comfortable Rumabout Vehicle.

I drived a rav4 just like that yesterday and I must say that I knew that it was very good..but I was not expecting to be that much good ! Its so safe, confortable, stylish, fast...You need to drive it to believe

It also looks 10 times better, will by all accounts last 10 times longer, be in the shop 10 times less, and get better gas mileage and be worth 10 times more in four years than the POS Exploder.
