I think the happy beat of the song helps push the sadness of the song even more.
Lola was a showgirl, tony was bartender. They loved each other in this happy place. One night when a costumer went to far Tony defended his girl and died in the club. The tragedy is that to this day she stays there as an old lady thinking of tony and the past while the world moves on and the club changed but stayed a "Happy place". Everyone oblivious to her pain.
