I remember working one that had just come out after a refit. 67754 was the number, she was clean and re-painted and ran along as though the whole thing was riding on cushions. It was a pleasure to work it.
The firebox was fitted with 'rocker fire bars' to break up the clinker and after dropping the ash pan doors was so easy. With the N7, the clinker had to be shovelled out of the doorway with a long shovel.
The L1 holds a permanent place in my memories.

@g7usl I not only fired to them I drove them too Peter. Yes they was good runners and were capable of express passenger duties too. I was based at Enfield Town at the time. We had a few 'turns' where we used the L1 instead of the regular N7 class we had at Enfield. The L1 was stronger and faster and for the fireman was easier to clean the fire etc. For the driver, it was a bit awkward running 'bunker first' as would normally be the direction going to London. Sad they didn't preserve at least 1.

NICEE!
I used to love those engines and fired to them many times. 1957-1972.
Some people didn't like them because they 'slipped' too easy. I worked them Liverpool st. stn - Hertford East and while I was at Kings Cross they was used for mainly 'empty coaches' turns.

They certainly do look brilliant, and I think it is a real shame none have survived. Did you find them to be good runners when you were firing them? Looks like you worked on a line I am familiar with, we used it on drama trips to London from my college near Hertford. I am planning to convert it to one based at Hull Botanic Gardens, such as 67754.
