It's back! Our largest event, a celebration of the enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to learn on our campus. What's IAW you ask? An acronym frequently used for "Islam Awareness Week," the event where we as Muslims on campus come together to engage our fellow students in conversation about Islam, life, faith, and any questions.

THEME FOR IAW 2011 - Compassion: The Essence of Humanity

There is no active faith without compassi...on. The Prophet peace be upon him said, "None of you has faith until they love for their brother what they love for themselves." In all major religions, there exists the golden rule which is the principle of compassion: to treat others how we would love to be treated. Compassion enriches our interaction and allows us to come together as one humanity, despite our diversity in appearance and beliefs. Through IAW, we would like to raise awareness about the actions and traits that we as the human race should rekindle, to reinforce a basis for compassion.

What happens in IAW?
We set up in one of the busiest buildings on campus in the CCT Atrium with displays and small booths offering reading material and a welcome space for discussion. During the day is when we engage in conversation, build friendships with people on campus, and offer some yummy food! Each evening we offer a free lecture with a guest speaker to address topics under our theme. We end the week with public Friday prayers. Here is a breakdown of all our timings:
Tuesday March 8
Lecture: "A Beginners Guide to Islam"
6:30 PM in Kaneff 137
Speaker: Fiyyaz Jaat

Wednesday March 9
Lecture: "One God. One Message. One Humanity."
6:30 PM in SB/Davis 2072
Speaker: Shaykh Ramzy Ajem

Thursday March 10
Lecture: "Models of Compassion for Our Time"
7:00 PM in SB/Davis 2072
Speaker: Nazim Baksh (CBC Journalist & Producer)

Friday March 11
Public Friday Prayers
12:30 PM - 1:00 PM, Spigel Hall
Speaker: Shaykh Riad Ouarzazi

Anyone is welcome to attend these lectures: students, faculty, and staff of UTM, as well as your families and friends!

Who is IAW for?
IAW is for all people. Since compassion is a fundamental quality that extends to all of humanity, its call unites us all. Through IAW, we would like to inspire Muslims to commit to principles and actions of compassion in their daily life especially towards their fellow Muslims on campus. We would also like to serve as a reminder to those who aren't Muslim of upholding a commitment to better character and action, and inspire them to seek the truth always.
