Time-lapse shot (2-sec exposure every 10 sec) of part of Ursa Major (the Big Dipper) and Polaris (the north star) over 1 hour. Two jets fly in front of the constellation.

    No, it was a jet crossing the field of view. Because it was 2 second exposures and some lights on jets flash several times per second, jets show up as trails of dots in a single exposure, or frame of a video like this.

    The Big Dipper is part of a larger constellation, or group of stars, known as Ursa Major, which means "Great Bear". The 7 or so bright stars form a pattern that looks like a stove pot, or "dipper" with a handle. You can see Polaris, the north star, in this video as well, which is at the end of the "handle" of the Little Dipper.
