hello, sorry for late reply, i use a nylon buttoning twine for all stitching and buttoning. it rarely snaps and has a longer life than the traditional twine although it is slightly more expensive, but i believe in doing a job that lasts.
Having an antique chair re-covered is something that may have to be done every few years or so (depending on the wear and tear of the fabric and colour schemes in the home) the upholstery should last the best part of a lifetime,
