Couple hundred nm difference in wavelength but that isn't the important bit. An infra-red LED does not have much general applications because it is invisible, a visible spectrum LED has a massive range of applications.

You have just fallen into the mainstream though of hating America for everything. Think about Lamborghini from Italy. A Nissan GTR can destroy any Lamborghini in a race yet it is 3x cheaper than the cheapest Lamborghini. Your example is not unique to America.

you know how much there is a difference in the production of infra red and visible light led's? my point was that Americans make big deal from everything. like they are doing with Apple and other products that are better produced in other countries but American brands focus more on presentations and advertising and sell their products 3-4 times more expensive than others.

That was the problem, it was in the infra-red. His was able to produce light in the visible spectrum.
