A Call to Catholics

A mother in Brazil took her 9 year old daughter to the hospital for a complaint of abdominal pain. Once at the hospital, the young girl was found to have conceived twins. It was discovered that the child had been raped and sexual abused since she was 6 by her stepfather. This left her 4 months pregnant. The stepfather is also suspected of sexually abusing another disabled child within the family. With the 9 year olds life safety concerns in mind, the child's mother and Doctor decided to proceed with an abortion. Upon completion of the procedure, the archbishop of Brazil excommunicated the mother, doctor and all the medical staff involved with the procedure from the Catholic church. Furthermore, the Vatican gave the decision their blessing. The daughter was not excommunicated due to catholic laws prohibiting children from being excommunicated, nor was the stepfather who raped and impregnated her.

When it comes to safety concerns, one of the many risks would be perineal and vaginal tearing which is fairly common with pregnancy among adults. This would have been especially relevant regarding a 9 year old body attempting to give birth to twins.

Another Catholic priest was recently being threatened with excommunication in the U.S. for ordaining a women to the priesthood. Apparently another offense that is worthy of excommunication within the church.

As anthropology majors (Nora a joint major in environmental science as well) we're having difficulties understanding all of this. We posted this video with the hopes that it will inspire healthy discussion. This is a call to everyone to help explain this situation, specifically those within the Catholic faith.

What authority, n privilage do u guys think u all can be living on this earth but not those two babies? There is no excuse what so ever to take away an innocent babies, you will never know if those two babies got a chance to grew up n they can make a differnt for this world. Everybody have the right to live on earth. Nature provide itself, if a 9 years old can get pregnant which mean she can also give birth or I'm sure this 21st century have the tools n medicals to help that poor girl.

@Phat2kewl What right does that 9 year NOT have in your eyes to life? It's quite possible that her body could not anatomically/physically carry out the birth of 2 twins -- death of the mother was a VERY likely possibility here. Why does she not have any rights here? Why does her rape and her subsequent pregnancy take precedence over her God given life?

@xadinuk Thanks for such a thoughtful response. We may not completely see eye to eye on everything, but I can appreciate the comprehensive response to the issue regarding the ordaining of women. It sounds like reform is definitely needed.

@geturphil69 well assuming the instance is based in a westernised country it would simply be because we live is a society with a vastly different social structure in comparison to 2k odd years ago.

Personally I would not be offended by a women priest. If Jesus was to choose apostles today I would like to think the choices would be vary different!
