The following is a transcript of The Cadet Experience, video by Petty Officer 1st Class NyxoLyno Cangemi

NICHOLAS PERRY - Third class cadet
Being on the Eagle is a good way to get close with your classmates. Going on liberty with them, doing sail stations, not being able to leave the boat because you're in the middle of the ocean ... you learn a lot about them. I think as a class, we grew together a lot. You might have been able to see that if you weren't aboard.

My experience aboard Eagle has been busy. I've learned a lot. It's been challenging, but it was worth it.

JAMIE CHICOINE - Third class cadet
My most memorable experience on Eagle has been when I climbed the togallant. I'm pretty scared of heights, and the fact that I did it all out on the ocean instead of in port when the boat wasn't moving. I surprised myself, and that was probably Tyne coolest part of the trip. I've been doing things that I didn't think I could do.

WALTER HEANEY - Third class cadet
It's definitely a challenging experience, because if you don't like climbing, or if you don't like handling lines, at some point you have to do something that you don't enjoy or that might scare you.

LESLIE MAJCHER - Third class cadet
I've learned how to interact with the enlisted and appreciate the hard work that they do. They work really hard, and it will be easy for me when I'm an officer to relate and understand where they're coming from and work with them in the future.

HOLLY MADDEN - First class cadet
It's a really neat experience to see the cadets really get their heads in the game, like "this is real," and just come in together and get everything handled. It was a really good experience for them.

It's been a blast. It's unreal learning, taking no knowledge whatsoever, coming onboard and just growing in all our experiences. It's been phenomenal.

You learn a lot about yourself. You learn how well you work with people. I think you really learn how you work under pressure. Working with classmates trying to keep that positive attitude in front of everyone when you might be having a bad day and trying not to show people that.

NICHOLAS PERRY - Third class cadet
The cutter side of the Coast Guard is completely different than anything else, and it takes everyone onboard to make it work.

JAMIE CHICOINE - Third class cadet
I'm going to take away friendships. I think I was close with a lot of my classmates before the Eagle, but being friends with those classmates and going through the Eagle experience together, sailing together and being underway two weeks together at a time and going through a gale [storm], you really got a lot closer to them. I'm going to take away that bonding. This is something that none of us will ever forget.

  • Fantastic!

  • Great job capturing the spirit and purpose that sail training on the Eagle imparts to those dedicated men and women onboard--including cadets, officers, and enlisted! Brings back fond memories of the incredible 10 weeks I spent onboard as a 3/c cadet during OpSail 76!
