@littlebadboyph Legend tells about one manuscript encouraging you to let your opponent thrust his blade through your palm so you can divert it. Of course, only in emergencies. But still =P

I used to fence in college. We did modern French/Italian fencing as sport. I wouldn't try this in modern fencing. I think it's against the rules to grab your opponent's blade, which is what the free hand is positioned for. In an actual duel, you'd probably be wearing a heavy leather glove on that hand, or have a dirk in it. This style is not for sport, it is for blood.

@iPood523 I've found the volte/demivole/inquartada to be effective if used sparingly.

So, no noticeable issues overcoming the 3+ inch range advantage of a rapier? Were you using an actual court sword or a modern epee.
Were these historical fencers any good? ...honestly:P

It seems that rapier fighting is very minimalist in its movements. Or is it just this type of movement sets?
-
@TheWoodenKnight hello, getting the center of the body little bit backwards allows you to push your upper body forward as requested by Fabris. Without that your position would be unstable and you would be probably pulled forward.

I come from a different sword fighting system. This clip is very interesting! If I may ask, what is the position of the free hand for?
-
@barriolimbas I took notice of that as well - my first, only, and probably wrong idea is that perhaps the reason the centre of the body is kind of thrust back, if you know what I mean, is that it somehow compensates for the weight of the blades (or the forward facing off-hand). Or perhaps it's an issue of safety?

@littlebadboyph: It is used for intercepting the blade of the opponent in case of need

Hi there, my name's Paul. I'm a fencer, and i was wondering if the traditional style you've shown would be effective in a bout in a modern day competition. It looks rather effective.. Very tempting to try lol. My only concern is, would it be able to keep up with the little tricks modern day fencers usually use? (including style of play due to the different weapons) and also, if so, have you ever fought this way against a modern style fencer? If you can answer this, thanks =)

@iPood523 I never fenced against the modern fencer by this way, because in my experience fights with modern fencers were always fought with modern light blades which are not appropriate for is method of fencing. Therefore I had to adapt my fencing nearer to French school or younger periods.
