A brief clip of Jacqueline Kennedy speaking French. A much better version of this footage can be found in the DVD 'Jackie: Behind the Myth'.

  • I re-watched this because I'm studying French. For any native French speakers out there, the last thing she said was "J'en etait une heure" which translates to "I was one of them once"?

  • For those who speak French, I'm curious to know if Jackie had an American accent in her French speaking or did she speak it perfectly?

  • @firmingitup She has the French accent down pretty good in this clip.

  • What a pity : this clip is too short to really appreciate Jackie's french but it's a pleasure earing her speaking so fluently !

  • she spoke like three or four languages fluently. her mother would make her speak french as a child when at the dinner table. one of her ancestors Michael Bouvier was from France. she really took to her french side. it was hard to believe she was a U.S citizen because she had that distinctive voice. caroline kennedy is also fluent in french.

  • @firmingitup She's got an american accent.

  • @PresidentBosch I think that she simply says "j'en étais une" which means "i was one of them". in any case the last word has no real importance, and you do understand french really well !

  • she has no accent she speaks well

  • @sanyo51 This is a myth, she spoke french....she parroted spanish in front of the cameras....she did the same with Polish....she knew neither of those languages fluently.

It's also asserted sometimes that she knew italian and greek.....this is also untrue...

I don't know why ppl feel compelled to make her more than she was-----she's still Jackie Kennedy...beautiful, stylish, mysterious--that's enough

the only legit mulit-lingual celeb is Audrey Hepburn

  • @PresidentBosch I've just read the other commentary below--and I think she does say "à Savoie" (which, gramatically, should be "en Savoie," as it is a region and not a town. Sorry for all this pedantic rambling...

  • @PresidentBosch The last thing she said was ''J'en étais une à Savoie'' Which means '' I was one of them in Savoie'' She studied at the university of Grenoble, near the region of Savoie. ''Heure'' means hour and wouldn't fit in the sentence.

  • @PresidentBosch No, she said "j'en étais une", she just pronounced the last "e" quite strongly.

  • @sanyo51 Right. And the fact that she had a keen and genuine interest in everything having to do with the French culture must have helped her to achieve that proficiency, too. I'm reading one of the many biographies that have been writen about her and it says that she was pretty much a francophile and embraced that culture to its fullest. Later on, a couple years before meeting John, she spent a year living and working in France, hence the accent and fluency.
