I totally agree about the undubbed vs overdubbed versions musically; But you must remember that in the early '60s when Norman Petty did them, there was NO WAY the tapes would have been commercially viable otherwise. The closest thing then would have been simple guitar-based folk. But Buddy wasn't a folk singer, and that sort of 'crossover' between folk and rock didn't happen for another maybe five years. And the technology to 'clean' the tapes and then dub them was primitive compared to now.
Isn't it crazy that a cover that Buddy Holly demo'ed in his apartment is the at the top of searches on Youtube for this song title? It's been said that this was his mother's favorite song, and he intended to do a version of it for her. People say his guitar playing was simplistic on these demo tapes. I strongly disagree - his high E chord at the 12th fret with all the other strings ringing open - it wasn't until the 90's you heard that again. His sparkle and energy are very apparent here.
Imanuglyfrog is a breathtakingly beautiful YouTube-er. Somebody must've kissed you and you become the Prince of Buddy's undubbed masterpieces, I think. Yeah, and when I hear what Norman Petty did to these songs, imanuglybuddyhollylover. It's too dreadful to even think about!

These recordings are so much better than the overdubbed versions that got released originally.
