The Monument to the War of Independence

The Monument to the War of Independence commemorates the Estonian victory in this War.
In the War of Independence, from 1918 to 1920, Estonia fought against Soviet Russia, the German Iron Division and the Baltic German Landeswehr to protect its independence, declared in 1918. The Estonian military forces included Estonians, local Baltic Germans, Russians, Swedes, Latvians, Jews and representatives of other natuins. Estonia was supported by the British Navy and volunteers from Denmark and Sweden. The Russian White Army was an ally of Estonia.

Around 100,000 men fought in the Estonian forces and over 7000 of them were killed in battle or died of wounds.

The Monument to the War of Independence is crowned by the Estonian Cross of Liberty Estonia's only military decoration, awarded from 1919 to 1925.

The 23.5 metre high glass monument, made of 143 glass panels, looks like an ice-sculpture and symbolises freedom that is difficult to achieve, remains fragile and is easily destroyed.

The monument has been designed by Rainer Sternfeld, Andri Laidre, Kadri Kiho and Anto Savi.

The Monument to the War of Independence was built in 2009 and was supported by the donations from 12000 persons.
