Class version of 'The Thrill is Gone' by Rob Strong, one of Ireland's finest vocalists. Rob and band performed at the South County pub, in Douglas, Cork, Ireland, Sunday October 24th, 2010, the weekend of the annual Cork Jazz festival. Great guitar solo (and tone) from Anton Morelli.
The South County bar is one of the best pubs in Cork, and the choice of many local folk for a regular pint! Recently, it has become a music venue, and is well suited to hosting of gigs. However, there is a low 'wall' (or bar counter?) located in front of the stage (check out the obstruction obscuring the fine guitar work in the video), and hopefully, this will soon be taken away.
Featuring:
Rob Strong: vocals, bass
Anton Morelli: Guitar:
Cormac Crowley : drums

From Irishshowbands.com: In the early 1970's nobody in Ireland personified the raw energy of rock and blues music like Rob Strong, one of the most unique voices of the era. Rob and the overdrive brass section of the Plattermen laid down some of the funkiest sounds ever heard in an Associated Ballroom. But it wasn't always that way. A rather tame looking Rob first entered the showband scene as the bass player with The Polka Dots, a far cry from his latter days with the Plattermen.
Our best guess is that Rob started his career in the early 60's.
He's perhaps destined to be remembered as father of Andrew of Commitments fame, but Rob Strong is a force to be reckoned with in his own right....
From the Headline agency:
Rob Strong initally came to prominence with the Soul/Funk outfit "The Plattermen" in the early seventies. Their powerhouse interpretations of the likes of " Blood Sweat & Tears" and James Brown material as well as their own tunes swiftly gained the band a huge national following. Setting a high standard of musicianship, their sound and style, although often emulated by subsequent Irish Bands was rarely equaled
With the disbandment of "The Plattermen" in 1974 Rob eager to broaden his horizons moved to the states where he played the club circuit both in Kansas City and Las Vegas for several years. Returning to Ireland in 1976 Rob decided to embark on a solo career and founded the "Rob Strong band". Despite an absence from the Irish live circuit, the band quickly developed a sizeable and loyal following with Robs gravely vocal and incredible range.
Often compared to the likes of Joe Cocker and Ray Charles, the R.S.D bacame renowned for delivering a high energy, rocking set.

Ah yes, I remember seeing him in the Majestic Ballroom, Mallow with the Plattermen in the 70s ...tinted shades and very long hair - "ride a painted pony, let the spinning wheel spin"... kudos to the axeman - that's the sound I like to hear from a 335.
